The Hexahedron of Transmutation

Mevin Shlottler was undeniably a dandy.  His armor was more ornamental than effective.  The smith had spent more time and money on the leather-tooling and jewels on his scabbard, than the quality of the blade within it.  He wore a silk-lined cape of white fur, that cascaded down his back to the midpoint of his calf.  And his hair was coifed and oiled, in a stylish, though impractical, style popular in the social circles of Citadel this week.

Despite Mevin's worth being isolated to his money and his ability to show off that money, he was still welcome in Emperor Jestak's inner circle.  Some said it was because the Shlottler family was old-money, and a close friendship with Mevin brought along with it respectability for the Emperor among the old-money families of the Capital.  Others said that despite Mevin's lack of dignity in showing off his wealth, his loyalty to the Emperor was unimpeachable.  And loyalty was a commodity of great value to the Emperor.

But, the real reason for Mevin's place among Jestak's inner circle, was a closely guarded secret.  Only a few of Jestak's close advisors knew the truth.  A device named the Hexahedron of Transmutation had been passed down through the Shlottler family for many generations, and Mevin was currently in possession of the Hexahedron.

Imbued with divine power, it was said that Mevin's great, great, great grandfather was given the magical cube by the God Zuther the Prosperous.  The device was a puzzle box of sorts, with various colored tiles on its outer surface, and a unique magical symbol inlaid with gold on each individual tile.  The cube could be twisted, and turned, and thus the configuration of colors and magical symbols could be altered, and recombined in any way one chose.

Jestak often pressed his "friend" to talk of the Hexahedron, and share the secrets of its powers.  But, Mevin was closed mouth about the whole affair, only willing to show off the cube's power to turn lead into gold...and only occasionally.  Jestak wondered if this was the only power that the Shlottler family had bothered to decipher over the years, or whether the cube possessed vastly greater powers that Mevin simply chose to keep secret, out of discresion or fear.

Whatever the case, Jestak seemed fond of keeping Mevin the Dandy close at hand, and the Hexahedron of Transmutation never far from his sphere of influence.
