Vax Retrieves Something Precious Before the Battle

    Bert Godding

Two nights before the start of the Nameless War….

King Vax recruited a squad of soldiers to act as guards for him, for a night.  He paid them in good gold coin and bade them not to disturb him in the small tent he had procured.

“Let no man enter the tent, or disturb me in any way,” he ordered the men.  “I must rest for an entire night to be ready for the battles to come.”  He gave a sly grin.  “The only man who may intrude upon my seclusion is myself.”  The soldiers were confused at this, but said nothing, as they were being well paid to stand around.

Vax entered the tent at dusk.  Although curious, none of the guards looked in upon him.  No one came near them or tried to approach the tent until dawn.

At dawn, a rider approached at a furious pace upon a frothing and blown horse.  As the rider approached in the morning light, the guards were stunned to see the king himself atop the horse.  He wore a breastplate instead of the plate mail he was in the night before, and appeared as tired and worn out as the horse beneath him.

He stopped the horse in front of the tent and called to the soldiers by name.  They looked about in confusion as Vax slid off the horse, exhausted.

“I told you that the only man who may intrude on my seclusion was myself,” he panted.  “And so it has come to pass.  I thank you for your vigilance, but it is no longer required.”

He pointed with his thumb back towards the horse.  “The nag is near death, I’m afraid.  I’d take it to the cook wagon, if I were you.  I think it can still serve the war effort as stew meat.”

He handed each man another gold coin and retreated into the tent.  One man looked back as the flap was lifted and was shocked to see the king lying inside in his plate mail armor.  The king in the breast plate looked back and gave him a wink before he pulled the flap closed behind him.
