Kempin Players Handbook - Work in Progress

The rulebook has definitely taken form.  All the pieces are there, and fairly fleshed out.  I have some sections to complete and polish, but we're almost there.  The current PDF is already at 1500+ pages.  Download it by clicking on the "Download" button on the upper right-hand side of this page!  This is Update 08-05-2023.

Cleaned up the Multiclassing rules, and added a chapter on Interlude stories and how to use them.

Added the Hippogriff stats to the Exotic Mount chapter.  And the Carrying Capacity for a hippogriff in the Exotic Mounts table.

The Deathbringer class is mostly added.  Need to add the spell list and clean up the thrall's.

Added a chapter on Trinkets, but it is not completely formatted.

I'll get both of these things cleaned up, and get it uploaded as soon as I can.

Uploaded a new version of the rules.  Cleaned up some stuff regarding Exotic Weapons proficiency.  And there are about 3 new chapters half-finished!  There is a new feat called the Exotic Master.  Next update will see some things finished up.  :-)

When you click the "Download" button in the upper right-hand side of this page, you will download "Update 01-15-2023"
of the Kempin rulebook.  Lots of work still to do, but we're definitely getting there.  In this update, check out:

The Martyr Class, and the Martyr spell-list
              The Gunslinger Class
The Captain Class is almost done!
              Auxiliary Level Options

              • Mark Stinson

Added the ogre species to the rare species section of the book.  Cleaned up the witch/warlock class a little, especially in the area of what special familiars are available.  And added the martyr class to the book, and all its subclasses.  Still need to add a few martyr-specific spells.  But, I've almost got that wrapped up.

                • Mark Stinson

Added the Dhampyr species to the "Rare Species" chapter.  And I've included a full Thieves Cant and Gamblers Flash glossary at the end of the rulebook.

                  • Mark Stinson

Expanded the Herbalism chapter a little, adding "Jungle" and "Underwater" herb descriptions and updated the herbalism lists to reflect this.  FYI.

                    • Mark Stinson

Added the Giwa species to the Rare Species chapter.  Giwa is the same word, whether singular or plural.  They are elephant men, from the city of Nkume Obo in the Red Jungle.  Ross' character Lobo was one of these species.  I've rewritten most of the background information on the Giwa to place them firmly in the World of Kempin.

                      • Mark Stinson

I've added a chapter called Aquatic Species, that is similar to the Rare Species chapter.  These species are not playable as PC's without the permission of the DM.  They are being included to make a fully undersea campaign possible.  Though a few of them would work for any campaign.

                        • Mark Stinson

I added a "Creating New Spells" section to the Spells & Magic chapter.  FYI.

                          • Mark Stinson

I've added so much since I last left a comment, that I don't even know what to update you about.  Suffice it to say A LOT has been added.  Most recently, I'm taking mounts and vehicles out of the Equipment chapter, and broke it out into its very own chapter called Mounts & Vehicles of course.

That new chapter is not 100% done, but it is close.  The Vehicles and Vehicles upgrade portion is done...and it is worth checking out.  Definitely worth checking out.

I have some things to add to the Mounts portion of the chapter, including a wider variety of horses and other mounts you can ride.  If you take a peek, check out the Bonded Mounts section, where it talks about earning Feats for your bonded mounts.  :-)

And tonight we topped 1000 pages.  We're at 1006 currently.

                            • Mark Stinson

Another updated version, that includes the Sorcerer, and 25 Sorcerer Origins (subclasses.)

                              • Mark Stinson

This updated version, includes the Wizard class and 20 Wizard Schools (subclasses).  FYI.

                                • Mark Stinson

Both the Paladin (23 subclasses) and Ranger (13 subclasses) are complete, and in the version available for download here.  The Ranger is based on the UA Revised Ranger, and is much much better than what originally appeared in the PHB...even with the bad revisions made in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.  This revised Ranger is finally worth playing.  All I have left are the Warlock, Sorcerer, and Wizard.

                                  • Mark Stinson

Cleaned up the Classes chapter (formatting), and started building the Paladin in there.  I'm going to try to get the Paladin and Ranger done today.  And just keep working my way through the classes.  Then I'll return to clean up drugs and diseases.  Bouncing around when I get stuck on something.  :-)

                                    • Mark Stinson

Added some important rule tweaks throughout the text.  Switched out the lingering injuries section for a lingering injuries system that is much more detailed...and is broken down by damage-type.

                                      • Mark Stinson

Uploaded a new version, with the Herbalism chapter refined quite a bit.  Worked into it how minor skills work, and when they work.  Also grouped a few recipes into recipe-groups, if the recipes were similar enough in ingredients and difficulty to craft.  This new version also has the start of my work on the Disease chapter and Intoxicants chapter.  FYI.

                                        • Mark Stinson

Added a "This is Your Life" section to the Details and Quirks chapter.  This mostly comes from Xanathar's, and is a cool prompt for building your character's background and early life.  I also moved the Backgrounds chapter to before the Details and Quirks chapter, because it makes more sense to have your background in mind when you start filling in details.

Blacksmithing, Diseases, Illicit Drugs...are all on my list to tackle next.

                                          • Mark Stinson

Herbalism chapter is done, and added.

                                            • Mark Stinson

I've added and formatted the extensive chapter on Poisons.  I've clarified the role the Natural Toxins minor skill plays regarding the crafting of poisons.  I've edited the Poisoner feat, to dovetail with the new chapter on poisons.  And I've established a recipe system to govern how many poisons a character knows how to make, and described the steps to learn new recipes.  FYI.  Herbalism will get this same treatment next.

                                              • Mark Stinson

Changed font sizes throughout the book, to gain some extra space for more rules!  LOL.  Added character advancement rules for beyond 20th level (just in case!)  Cleaned up the first chapter, clarified and simplified some language, pinned down the formatting, and added artwork to the first chapter as well.

                                                • Mark Stinson

Added the conditions chapter, added various sections on rolling up a character, refined the chapter on character details and quirks, and the big "adds" were the large Adventuring chapter and the large Combat chapter.

                                                  • Mark Stinson

Added introduction to the chapter on classes, and a section on a redesigned multiclassing section.  Added the "Using Ability Scores" chapter, and tied it into the new Major/Minor skills Chapter.
