Mission Accomplished

The Report

When the whole team is together back on the ship, Adamn reviews the mission and its results. All of those who were there were exhausted from the week of nonstop work, but also hyper elated…like children on candy…they had found the drive, escaped with the knowledge and contracted to have a new ship built with a spike drive in it. Yes, we were wanted by the government and military of Veridian for genocide, but that was obviously a misunderstanding.

As Adamn explains it…well, it was a bit of a shit show on the planning side but it all turned out well. At this point, the likelihood of us returning to Zeta Prime is iffy. We’ll have a new ship and if we need to, create new identities. Since no one from neighboring systems have come knocking on our door, we should temper our expectations for what we find in the systems adjacent to ours. Get ready, he says with a mischievous grin and light in his eyes…we’re busting out of here and it might be even crazier!

To review for those who were waiting in the ship, Adamn says to the team, including our high tech robotic assistants…We landed on Forge and kept the ship hidden on the fringes of the main port and took the grav car in. While given some trouble for not having landed at the port, we were allowed into the city and made contact with a couple locals. Encountering a dissatisfied and recently unemployed miner about to be expatrioted we learned of an area with the potential of many downed prescream ships that could be fully encased in stone and thus protected from the havoc and destruction caused by the great disaster.

Adamn took the initiative to offer this local the opportunity to go with us and assist in our exploration of the area in exchange for transport off planet and 1000g if we find something. Plus, if we sell anything that we salvage with his assistance, he will get 10% of the profit from that. He understands that we might barter those items in which case he will get no compensation.

Without revealing too much

The exploration turned out to be risky, because of local hostile fauna and their attraction to and hatred of noise and vibrations of certain wavelengths, but also very valuable. We retrieved full plans for spike drive technology and after a failed attempt to return to Starlight Haven, negotiated a deal with Mad Murdoch of the Plunder.

In the process of trying to return to Starlight Haven, we learned that the government of Veridian and it’s military have accused us of trying to destroy the entire planet of Veridian with lumeriec crystal infection. This might have something to do with our encounter with the “us” beings we met and recommending they go to Veridian, but as they had 4 heavy cruisers, 3 battleships and a swarm of frigates and fighters waiting for us, we decided to travel another path and run for the asteroids and the cover they provide.

So that’s it…in a few weeks, we should have a new ship…a Corvette class frigate. It will have a spike drive for sure. It will have emissions dampers to help us stay undetected and it will have fuel scoops so as long as we can find a gas giant, we can refuel. Other than that, I can’t tell you much, other than we will have to train our bots to help with the ship. All jokes aside, we’re going to be in the largest and most dangerous frigate class ship that exists going into entirely unknown circumstances. Get ready for the danger and bullshit to get dialed up more than one notch.

There was a twinkle in Adamn’s eye that made one wonder if he liked this…was excited by it? He went on without waiting for questions.

We did pretty well with the week we had salvaging that cruiser on Forge. Besides the knowledge and spike drive parts, we found the following items, weapons and schematics while there.

<For Mark Stinson to fill, or let us know and I’ll fill it in. Adamn would have been looking for the following: Anything tech level 5 with Spike Routes, Armor and Weapons having the highest priority. After that, Armor and Weapons that are improvements to the equipment the team has, until we hav enough for the team, the bots and several spares for henchmen and assistants.>

<<Specific Items Adamn knows to look for: Weapons – TL5 Shear Rifles, Thunder Guns, Distortion Cannons. Armor – TL4 Combat Field Uniform, Icarus Harness, Assault Suit, TL5 Storm Armor, Field Emitter Panopoly. Heavy Weapons – TL5 Vortex Cannon. Drones – TL5 Pax, Electo.

The Plan

It’s counterintelligence, Adamn explained to the team. He’s obviously been worrying about the situation and their future. “We’ll create a counter narrative that better suits us and creates doubt about the accusations made against us. We’ll leave behind a couple videos that seed doubt as to why the accusations were made. It will be a distraction for the military and rulers of Veridian. I feel bad about Starlight Haven, I hope our actions didn’t get them invaded, but I doubt we’ll find out. It could be that they sold us out or someone there did…and that means for now, it’s too risky to go back. This project will help that situation, and besides, I’ve got spare time on my hand while our ship is being built and I don’t see it doing any harm.” He tells the team.

The Producers

Between his duties on the ship, working comms, and putting together their medbay, Adamn’s programming and computer use skills had improved. Not what he would consider an expert, but he was  definitely more than a beginner now. Still, even with the improvement in his skill, creating the videos took over a hundred hours.

Adamn created the first video, about the bioengineered terror beasts the powers that be were developing that we discovered on Veridian, not far from a major population center. He’ll get opinions from the different crew members about it and is enthusiastic about its purpose. At this stage he will be taking lots of “creative input” but will also caution that the direction will follow through to the subsequent video or videos and that “creative input” on those videos would be more detrimental than helpful.

With Cam’s help and Adamn’s ability to “see” what other people were thinking and feeling, he created a short but very accurate second video based on the compound where the psionics on Veridian were being imprisoned and the horrors that Cam saw there. Lot’s of work with Cam, if he’s willing, to make sure the video is realistic, contains details that only someone who had been there would know and that accentuates the horrors while still being honest/accurate.

Adamn doesn’t mention a third or fourth of subsequent videos but it’s not at all unreasonable for someone to have seen Adamn filming something that isn’t in any of the videos they saw or were asked to comment on. None of the “viewings” he does for the other team members include more than two videos or any other file attachments.

      Striker's Video

Striker starts the recording and settles down to record his message when the ambient lighting in the room shifts suddenly, casting an eerie red glow. Alarms blared in the background, their insistent buzz drowning out his thoughts.

"Damn it," Striker mutters under his breath, his brow furrowing in annoyance. "Not now."

With a quick glance around the room, he locates the source of the disturbance—a control panel flashing with urgent red lights. Sighing in frustration, he moves to silence the alarms, his movements swift and efficient as he punches in the override code. The cacophony of sound slowly fades into silence, leaving behind only the steady hum of the ship's systems. Striker takes a moment to compose himself, his heart still racing from the sudden interruption.

"Where was I?" he mutters to himself and the camera, shaking off the distraction. With a deep breath, he returns to his recording, determined to finish what he started despite the unexpected interruption.

"You know, it's a real shame that the best pilot in the sector was taken out like this," he muses, his voice carrying a mix of disappointment and defiance. "Seems like I was cheated of a warrior's death, you know? But hey, that's just how it goes sometimes."

He clears his throat before continuing, his expression softening slightly as he switches gears. "Anyway, I've been thinking a lot lately about the things that matter most in life. And, well, I guess what I'm trying to say is..."

Striker hesitates for a moment before taking a deep breath and launching into a sappy love poem:

In the swirling depths of chaos, where darkness holds sway,

I find my solace, in the tumultuous fray.

For in the dance of disorder, where order meets its end,

I discover a love that transcends.

Chaos, oh chaos, you're my guiding star,

Leading me onward, no matter how far.

In the chaos, I find freedom, unbound and untamed,

A wild, raging fire that cannot be named.

With every twist and turn, in the cosmic storm's embrace,

      I find a lover's touch, in the chaos's grace.

For in the maelstrom's fury, where all is torn asunder,

I find a love that's fierce, a love like thunder.

So let chaos reign, in its glorious might,

For in its chaos, I find my light.

In the swirling vortex of uncertainty's embrace,

I find my home, in the chaos's grace.

As he finishes reciting the poem, Striker can't help but feel a bit embarrassed by his own sentimentality. Nevertheless, he presses on, his voice more serious as he addresses Lyra directly.

"And to you, Lyra," he says, his tone sincere. "I know we've only met briefly, but there's something about you that... well, let's just say you've left a mark on me. I hope you're out there somewhere, listening to this message, and I hope you know that wherever you are, whatever you're doing, you're always on my mind. Take care of yourself, okay? And who knows, maybe our paths will cross again someday, in another life, but until that day at least you can say you met the best pilot in the galaxy. Stay safe, Lyra."

With those final words, Striker signs off.

As Striker finishes his heartfelt message, he sits back, feeling a mix of vulnerability and relief wash over him. Just then, cheers erupt from Adamn and Cam, who had been listening in from the other side of the room.

"Nice one, Striker!" Adamn calls out, giving him a hearty high-five. "That was a solid recording. And adding in that alarm? Genius touch!"

Cam nods in agreement, a grin spreading across his face. "Yeah, definitely gave it some extra drama. Lyra's gonna love it."

Striker returns their smiles, grateful for their support. "Thanks, guys. And speaking of Lyra..." He pauses, a mischievous glint in his eye as he prepares to answer their inevitable question. "Well, let's just say she's someone special I met recently. A Veridian Space Force Commander, no less."

Adam's eyebrows shoot up in surprise, while Cam whistles appreciatively. "A Commander, huh? That's some high-ranking company you're keeping, Striker."

With a chuckle, Striker nods in agreement. "Yeah, she's quite something. Let's just hope she appreciates my poetic talents."
